Hu Jia was sentenced on 3 April 2008 to three years and six months' imprisonment and one year’s deprivation of political rights for “inciting subversion of state power” by the Beijing Municipal No. 1 Intermediate People's Court. His lawyers were present at the hearing, as were his mother and his wife, activist Zeng Jinyan.
