Team: South Asia Team
Allowance: Travel and lunch expenses

Programme: MENA
Team: East Mediterranean
Duration: 3 months
Hours/Days per week: 2 days
Location: International Secretariat
Languages required: Good level of written and spoken English ; Fluent Arabic

Brief description of the team:

Volunteers will work as part of the East Mediterranean Team in the Middle East & North Africa Regional Programme. The programme is divided into four sub-regional teams. The East Mediterranean Team is one of these sub-regional teams. The team is responsible for Amnesty International's (AI) research and action on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the Palestinian Authority and Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

Role profile of the volunteer/intern:

The volunteer will be supervised within the team by the Research and Campaign Assistant (RCA). The other members of the team are two researchers and two campaigners. The volunteer may be asked from time to time to do work for these members of the team.

The volunteer’s main contact within the International Secretariat (IS) is the Volunteers' Development Coordinator in the Human Resources Programme (HRP).

Volunteers on the team generally work 2 - 5 days for a minimum of 3 months, although sometimes this period may be shorter or longer depending on the nature of the projects you have been assigned and your own requirements.

Much of the work done by volunteers within the team is administrative, particularly at the start. Depending on individual skills, understanding of AI and human rights, other work may be offered to the volunteer on the discretion of the team. The volunteer will be given appropriate training to enable them to complete the tasks assigned to them.

Voluntary work in one of the world’s leading human rights organizations can provide valuable experience and you will receive work references. However, please note that volunteering does not lead directly to employment with Amnesty International.

Voluntary work is unpaid, although travel and lunch expenses are provided. We are able to offer only very limited advice in terms of finding accommodation or employment in London. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own UK visa/work permit before arriving in the UK. AI can provide a supporting letter on request.

The work is supervised, but the volunteer is expected to be able to work independently, use their initiative and manage their own workload. Willingness to undertake routine administrative work is crucial. Projects may be devised by the team in collaboration with the volunteer which will aim to assist the team in fulfilling its strategic objectives, whilst making the best use of the volunteer’s own skills, interests and experience.

Task List

* Monitoring of Internet-based newspapers and newswires (English and Arabic-language) and electronic filing of relevant articles on the team databases.

* Translation of relevant news articles/other documents as needed by the team.

* Assisting with research: as appropriate the volunteer may carry out routine/office based secondary research under supervision of the team (looking up/maintaining statistics, doing Internet searches).

* Filing, photocopying and mailing.

Essential skills and experience

* Ability to multi-task and work independently

* Background through study, work or other experience in a relevant area, such as Middle East Studies, law, international relations, political science, social sciences

Desirable Skills and experience
