Schools are places for children to learn and grow. But many girls all over the world go to school fearing for their safety. Though both girls and boys of school age can be the victims of violence, girls are more likely to be the victims of gender-based violence, particularly sexual abuse and violence.

Generally this kind of violence against girls is not reported, the perpetrators are not punished and measures are not taken to prevent it from recurring. As a result, countless girls are kept out of school, drop out, or do not fully participate in school. Amnesty International demands that all governments implement the 6 Steps to Stop Violence against School Girls:

Step 1: Prohibit all forms of violence against girls
Step 2: Plan to make schools safe for girls
Step 3: Respond to incidents of violence against girls
Step 4: Provide support services for girls who have suffered violence
Step 5: Remove barriers to girls’ access to education
Step 6: Protect girls from abuse

Sign the petition to show your support for safe schools for girls, and to demand that the 6 Steps to Stop Violence against School Girls must be implemented. Amnesty International will hand over the signatures to the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative on Violence Against Children in due course.
